Minister

Reverend Stephen J. Barbour, B.A., B.A.Sc., C.P.H.I.(C), M.Div.

The Lord came and stood there calling as at the other times ‘Samuel! Samuel!’ Then Samuel said, “Speak, for your servant is listening. (1 Samuel 3:10)

Stephen was born and raised in St. John’s, the son of Jesse and Kay Barbour. He graduated from Memorial University in 1992 (B.A.) and Ryerson Polytechnical University in 1996 (B.A.Sc.) and received his professional designation (C.P.H.I.(C)) from the Canadian Institute of Public Health Inspectors in 1998. For several years he worked in the Environmental Health industry in private and public roles, but always felt a calling to Ordained Ministry.

In 2002, after much discussion and reflection with his family, Stephen approached the late Rev. John Murphy and his home congregation of Heritage United in Musgravetown to begin the discernment and candidacy process towards ordered ministry. He began his academic studies at the Atlantic School of Theology in 2004 and entered the full time residential M.Div. program in 2006 and convocated in 2010.

Stephen is humbled and honored by his calling to ministry and the imagery of servant and pilgrim. He feels that the story about Jesus and the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 21:13-35) speaks strongly to Christians today – we often fail to recognize the face of Christ in the most common of daily activities; but when we partake in activities of faith and justice, we overflow with wonder and hope for the future, and become filled with joy and excitement to share the Good News with others who need to hear it.

Stephen is married to Tracy (Rees) Barbour of Harbour Grace and they have two beautiful daughters: Juliet and Janelle.

Stephen and his family are excited to become a part of the community in Botwood and to share in the faith and fellowship found here.

May God’s grace bless each of you.

Minister of Music/Office Administrator

Mr. James L. Martin Jr.

James is a native of Lewisporte NL, who moved to St. John’s, and while vacationing in the area was approached about this position. James joined the staff at Trinity United on September 30/07. The joy of James’ life is music, which is evident whenever he sits to an organ or a piano. James also enjoys writting and composing music, and entertaining. When he is not playing music or writting James enjoys art, walking and cooking. James believes that he is closest to God when he is in nature. Therefore, his compositions find great inspiration from the wonders of nature which he enjoys viewing in person, or through his Dads photography. James invites you to preview 9 of his almost 90 original compositions found under the “Audio” section of this site.

Though he has no formal studies in music (degrees),  James counts it a blessing to have studied with some very gifted professionals, and attributes much of his success to these wonderful people. James has enjoyed playing the organs of St. Matthew’s United, Lewisporte, Riverside United, Norris Arm, Bethany United, Comfort Cove, St. Patrick’s Cathedral, St. John’s, George Street United, St. John’s, St. Paul’s Anglican, Lewisporte, St. Peter’s Anglican, Twillingate, Central United, Twillingate, and many more. James also appears at the Dockside Restaurant on Saturday evenings and other special occasions, providing dinner music.

James is very greatful for the opportunity to share in Ministry with Trinity United, through the gift of music.

James, I would love to hear your story of how you came to Trinity United. My belief is that God sent you to save the Church. When Gloria left I felt our church was doomed but along came James. You are just what the Doctor ordered. You bring such life and joy to the church and the choir has blossomed under your direction. Is it any wonder I think you are God sent?
